Did Jesus ever do karaoke?
Big Ideas
- Mark 14:26, Psalm 113-118
- We see little snippets of God’s character in Jesus’ life
- Jesus sings
- This is how Jesus chooses to spend his last night, singing hymns with his friends
- Redemption started as a place that was safe for cynics and doubters (it still is). For a lot of us, it’s scarier to sing, to pray, to be vulnerable in our joy
- Traditionally, Jews sang Psalm 113-118. This is a good guess for the songs Jesus sang on this night.
- They say “Praise Yahweh” over and over
- Things were dark and hard, but they still sang Praise Yahweh
- These are songs of resistance
- In this moment, even if I don’t feel it, I believe God’s steadfast love endures forever.
- They sang with gusto, “this is the day the lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad”
- We feel things and say things in worship that we don’t think or say the rest of the week
- We are singing WITH Jesus
Questions
- Read these Psalms together
- What would it be like to sing these songs with Jesus?
- What does your heart grab on to in these psalms today?
- Challenge yourself if you don’t think you’re a singer. Apparently Jesus thinks you need to do this too.
- What are things you sing or think in worship that you don’t the rest of the week?
- What would change if you felt like you were singing WITH Jesus?
- Do you feel like you need this practice of singing hymns?
