The “gospel” that Jesus proclaimed was a call to follow Him. Not just to receive certain benefits from Him, but to actually receive Him. This is what the earliest Christians seemed to hear from Jesus, because they did anything they could to follow Him - to know Him and learn from Him and actually become like Him.
