We often use cultural markers to identify ourselves as Christians. But God accepts people from all different nations and cultures, so these cultural markers must not be proof of grace. So what is?

Here are the definitions that were shown on screen during the sermon:

Grace: God gives us better than we deserve and better than we could do for ourselves

This is:

  • the first thing God wants us to know about Himself

  • seen foremost in Jesus

  • not the result of any act or intention of ours

  • not the grace of a swan or grace under fire

Culture: What we make of the world

This includes:

  • language and communication

  • all kinds of music and art

  • goods, like clothes, houses, and cars

  • expectations, like we have about time and family

  • shared values, dreams, and goals

Spirit: God's Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity

He is the one who:

  • is worshiped equally with God and Jesus

  • comes forth from God the Father

  • gives us life

  • spoke through the authors of the Bible

  • empowers all true worship
