Jesus is The Radiance of the Glory of God (A Memoir of Hope #4)

By becoming human, Jesus has reconnected humanity with divinity. He's given us access to every spiritual blessing and all power. He's freed us from our twisted desires and healed our rotting, dying bodies. So now our eternity will be one of glory, holiness, and unending life.

All of this is possible because Jesus is truly God. He's Light from Light, true God from true God, and is the same essence as God the Father. And He's permanently joined Himself to us. This is great news for us all, even now.

Outline:

  • Early Christians basically agreed on all of these:
    1. Proverbs 8 was about Jesus
      • The New Testament seems to equate “wisdom” with Jesus (for example, 1 Corinthians 1:30)
      • This is related to Jesus being the divine Logos (“Word”) who is also personified, participated with God in creation, etc.
    2. There’s only one God (Deuteronomy 6:4, etc.)
    3. God is unchangeable and indivisible (Malachi 3:6, etc.)
  • So was Jesus God or not?
  • Arius, in the 4th century, began teaching that Proverbs 8:22 said Jesus was created.
  • But if Jesus isn't God, we have no gospel, no good news, no salvation, no Christianity.
  • This is why the Council of Nicaea was called in 325. Here's what the church leaders agreed on:
We believe in one God, Father, Almighty
He’s the Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible
And we believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ
He’s the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages
He is Light from Light, true God from true God
He was begotten, not made
He is of one essence with the Father
Through Him all things were made
For us humans and for our salvation, He came down from heaven
He was made flesh by the Holy Spirit and by the Virgin Mary, and became human
He was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate and suffered and was buried
And on the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father
He will come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead
And His kingdom will have no end

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life
He proceeds from the Father
Together with the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified
He spoke through the prophets
And we believe in one holy, universal, and apostolic church
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
We await the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come
Amen!
