Help for the Helpless (Esther #3)

/Get the Sermons Automatically

God’s rescue of the Jews in the Persian Empire was a grand reversal—but it’s what He’s in the habit of doing. He helps the helpless, the powerless, the downtrodden, the broken hearted, refugees and wanderers, widows and the poor and orphans and the spiritually impoverished. Now He’s inviting us to join Him. Will we?

Main Text: Esther 8:3-10:3

Simple outline:

  • We’re in a mini-series on the Book of Esther. This week we’re looking at the story’s ending of revenge.

  • The people who planned to exterminate the Jews were instead slaughtered. And the Jews instituted an annual feast in celebration.

  • God has always been on the side of the helpless—from the first identification of His people, Israel, to the gospel of Jesus’ kingdom—so maybe we should be on the side of the helpless too.

Further resources:

  • The Bible Project makes great summary videos of Bible books. Here’s the one for Esther.

  • The book Vindicating the Vixens has a really insightful chapter about Esther and Vashti, as well as chapters on other misunderstood women of the Bible, like Mary Magdalene, Rahab, and Eve.
